Social Communication Groups

***Summer Groups Cancelled due to COVID-19***

The Social Communication Group is a 6-week session that teaches children about complex social concepts in a language they can understand. Its aim is to help children develop better self-awareness and perspective taking when sharing space or interacting with others.

The Social Communication Group will explore both the concepts of social expectations and interactions and then the implementation of these new skills in a group format.

The topics will include:

  • Thinking Thoughts & Feeling Feelings
  • The Group Plan
  • Thinking With Your Eyes
  • Body In the Group
  • Whole Body Listening

Each week the students will learn new social vocabulary and strategies through reading, structured activities, and dramatic play. The Speech Language Pathologist will also provide extension activities weekly to the parent that can be done the remainder of the week for further practice at home.

Children who will benefit from this group most:

  • Children who have normal to near normal language development
  • Are verbal communicators who are able to demonstrate joint attention
  • Children with the one of the following diagnoses: High-Functioning Autism, PDD-NOS, Asperger’s Syndrome, Nonverbal Learning Disability, Social Communication Disorder, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
